When you lose your job, there are two things you can do, either you allow yourself to slide back into depression or make the decision to get back on your feet.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused an economic breakdown in a lot of countries, industries and individuals.

In a bid to manage funds, a lot of companies had to lay some of their employees off.

Those who have decided to get back on their feet after a job loss is the ones who this content is for. Because they have made the better choice.

Steps On How To Get Back On Your Feet After Losing Your Job

As much as I try to sound encouraging, I don’t deny the fact that losing one’s job can be very depressing.

The thought of having to start a job hurting again is nothing to write home about.

But, it is not a time to allow yourself to stay down, rather it is the time to pick yourself up and try to find a new job.

Follow the steps below to get back on your feet after losing your job.

How to Get Back On Your Feet After Losing Your Job

1. Apply for Unemployment Compensation

Before getting a new job, you need to find a way to make money to feed.

A good way to get some money on that note is by applying for unemployment compensation.

The money you make from the unemployment compensation may not be as much as your former earning.

However, it is something to manage.

Sadly, not all countries compensate the unemployed, but if your country does, then take advantage of it while trying to figure out how to get back on your feet after your job loss.

2. Identify The Reason Why You Were Fired

Before going in search of a new job, it is important to identify why you lost the previous one.

With the improvement in technology, you can now use automation for some jobs.

As a result, companies no longer need those who used to perform the manually.

If you lost your job as a result of something like this, then chances are that it may be difficult for you to get a new job with your analogue skill.

On that note, you may want to get a skill that is currently in demand. Since your current skill is no longer important.

Also, if you lost your job as a result of a bad working attitude, then you need to work on that

These are just a few instances of what can cause a job loss, if you don’t relate to any, then identify what caused yours.

3. Identify Whether Or Not You Need To Change A Occupation

After identifying the reason why you lost your job, it should already be obvious to you whether or not you need to change occupation.

Even if the change is temporary, just go ahead with it.

If you find that you need a new set of skills to leave your current job

4. Ascertain if You Have Transferable skills

When applying for a new job, you should identify whether or not you have transferable skills.

Transferable skills are those skills that you put into practice while working on your previous job that may be applicable to a new job.

When searching and applying for a new job, consider going for the ones which allow you to make use of some of the skills you already have, that way you would not have to start from scratch.

There are job search engines that help job seekers filter available jobs to match the skills they already have, a good example of such a platforms is CareerOneStop.

5. Update Your Skills And Qualification

To put yourself at a better chance of getting another job, maybe even a better job, consider updating your skills.

It is totally understandable that you just lost your job, and spending money on a course of training is not what you want to do.

But there are a couple of cheap ways to improve your skills and qualification. You can consider taking a short free online course or asking a friend to help you develop an IT skill.

The reason for this is not just to help you get a better job, but also to make you more relevant at a new job.

This way even when the organization needs to lay staffs off in order to conserve funds, you won’t be an option.

6. Search For Job Vacancies

Although you have just been laid off, and other companies out there are also laying off staffs, there are still companies that are hiring.

Some sectors to consider in your job hunt are IT, health, education, warehousing and delivery, construction, physical therapy, grocery stores and pharmacies.

When searching for, as embarrassing as you may find it, be open to everyone who may be of help to you.

Also, to find those companies who are currently hiring, take advantage of the website where job postings are advertised like Indeed.

The fact that you need a job does not mean you should just jump into any job, else you may be jumping out any time soon.

You should still be selective and careful enough to identify a job that suits your preference.

8. Prepare For A New Job

After making a list of all the jobs you will like to apply for the next thing you should do is get your resume ready.

You obviously do not want to use the same resume that was used to get your previous job, update your resume to suit the requirements for the new jobs you will be applying for.

Also, prepare yourself for a professional interview, gain all relevant knowledge, the overall goal is to put you at a better chance of getting a job.

Although your stay at your previous job did not end well, take advantage of the knowledge you gained, the experience and the skills you developed while on the job to do better at your new job.
