The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) was founded in 1950, is a non-profit educational and support organization in the USA.

SWE Scholarships support women pursuing ABET-accredited associate, bachelor and graduate student programs in preparation for careers in engineering, engineering technology and computer science worldwide.

SWE awarded roughly 230 fresh and renewed scholarships valued at more than 750,000. In the past 5 years, SWE has awarded more than 1,150 scholarships equivalent to more than $3.6 Million

The ultimate mission of the organization is to inspire women who are the SWE Scholarship winners, to achieve full potential in careers as leaders and trailblazers in engineering, expand the image of the profession as a constructive force in improving the quality of life and demonstrate the value of diversity.

The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Scholarship is hosted in the USA.

Eligible Countries

International students studying or planning to study an SWE-approved program are welcome to apply for SWE scholarships. The program does accept ABET accredited international schools for some of our scholarships.

If you are an international student studying at program in the United States, please select the respective state and school in your application.

If you are an international student studying at a program outside of the United States, please choose “other” when entering state under the school sections.

Scholarships Benefits

SWE Scholarship Application offers a financial benefit to the beneficiaries which ranges from $1,000 to $ 15,000, most of which are renewable yearly.

Who is Eligible?

You’re eligible if you are:

  • A person who Identifies as female
  • An incoming freshman through graduate student
  • Studying engineering full-time (exceptions made for re-entry/non-traditional students)
  • Enrolled in an ABET-accredited program
  • A community college, university, or re-entry/ non-traditional student

Selection Criteria

SWE judges applications based on four main criteria – academic preparation, leadership and activities, work experience, and interest in engineering. Make sure to highlight these areas on your application!

Please use the incoming freshman scholarship application, which opens on March 1.

Do I need to be a member of SWE to be eligible for SWE scholarships?

No, you do not have to be a member of SWE to be eligible for SWE scholarships. However, some of the scholarships do require SWE membership.
To be considered a member of SWE, you must be a paid member of the society and have a membership number. Participation in university activities alone does not make you a member of the society.

How do I apply for more than one SWE scholarship?

There is one application to fill out and each applicant will be considered for all SWE scholarships she is eligible for.

What is SWE looking for besides GPA?

SWE considers academic achievements, participation in extra-curricular/volunteer activities and enthusiasm for engineering. We are looking for involvement in engineering organizations beyond joining and attending events/meetings.
Even if you can’t become an officer or chair of a committee as a freshman, we recommend participation to show you are committed and involved.
